Warning! Spoilers forEuphoria season 2 below.
Euphoria season 2 was always heading towards a tragic conclusion, but the potential death of Ashtray was a shocking turn of events that lays the foundation for Fez's journey in season 3—if the character is really dead. Ashtray was introduced as Fez's young sidekick inEuphoria season 1, a pre-teen drug dealer that proved to be one of the show's most outlandish additions. AfterEuphoriasidelined characters like Lexi, Fez, and Ashtray, the trio got their due in season 2, with an unlikely relationship developing betweenthe older teens while Ashtray got to show off a different side to his character.
This side included a propensity for intimidation and violence as Ashtray murdered Mouse, Fez's drug supplier, early on.He also showed no hesitation in beating Cal Jacobs, Nate Jacobs' father, with the butt of a shotgun after he found Cal loitering around their home. This was also coupled with an origin story of sorts for both Fez and Ashtray.Euphoria season 2 opened with an extended flashback centered around Fez and how Ashtray came to be in his life. Of course, this was all setting up a potentiallytragic ending for the beloved character inEuphoriaseason 2.

As a SWAT team descended on Fez and Ashtray's house after the latter murdered Custer (a fellow drug dealer), Ashtray decided to engage in a shootout with the police that resulted in Fez taking a bullet to the stomach and the police seemingly killing Ashtray. But is he really dead? The answer is unclear as the actual act happens off-camera, but this could be for a few reasons.Euphoria is no stranger to shock value, but killing a child as young as Ashtray onscreen could've been a step too far for the show. There's also other evidence to point at Ashtray surviving.

Javon Walton, who plays Ashtray inEuphoria season 2, said it's possible that his character survived the SWAT raid on his and Fez's house: "There’s definitely hope for Ashtray to still be alive. Because if there’s somebody who could take a bullet in the show, it’s Ashtray." Still, it would almost make more sense for Ashtray to not have survived.Fez was originally going to die inEuphoria season 1, but those plans were scrapped when Angus Cloud's character became a fan favorite. Giving him a storyline wherein he must process the death of the person he's closest to would giveEuphoria the ability to focus on Fez in a way that it hasn't yet before, save for the exploration of Fez and Lexi's relationship inEuphoria season 2.
While the possibility of Ashtray is enticing thanks to Walton's excellent work inEuphoria, keeping him alive would feel antithetical to the ethos of the show, one where it's not afraid to pull punches and really go there when it comes to shocking and traumatic developments. It would also undermine the great work that both Walton and Cloud did in theEuphoria season 2 finale - despite how baffling Ashtray's choice is, the house raid sequence is one of the most riveting of a much quieter episode that ended on a hopeful note for Zendaya's character Rue. Ultimately, whether or not Ashtray is alive is up to show creator and writer Sam Levinson and with a potentially long wait forEuphoria season 3, Ashtray's fate may not be revealed for quite some time.
