New Smyrna Beach

North of Canaveral, you can surf in New Smyrna Inlet, the south side of the famous Ponce de Leon or "Ponce" Inlet. Known locally as "the wave magnet," Smyrna's waves are well suited for trick riding or "hot dogging." It's also now considered the most consistent surf.

Tide and Surfing

If the tide is too high and rising, each successive wave will push higher, while if the tide is high and falling, the energy in the waves will decrease with each wave. As the tide approaches low tide, the waves will be less powerful and flat.

Cocoa Beach does not have monster waves, but it is still the surf capital of the east coast and the small wave capital of the world. This is a place where surfing superstars, like all-time great Kelly Slater, got their start.

During the winter months, the water can be quite chilly in Central and North Florida, so a full wetsuit with boots may be necessary. In the summer, it's usually boardshorts and a rashguard will suffice. Material: Wetsuits are made from neoprene, a synthetic rubber that provides insulation and flexibility.

Surfing is usually best when it's wind-free. A surfer values glassy conditions―a calm surface of the water without gusts of wind―the most, but tough surfers learn to manage even the worst conditions. In surfing, there are two primary wind conditions: onshore and offshore.

Located in Penrod Park, just east of where I-95 ends, South Beach has the potential to deliver barreling, board-breaking peaks. During north or northeast swell conditions, the A-frames are shapeliest on the incoming tide with offshore (west to northwest) winds.

Waves can be engineered to any size and shape specification. Typically, wave pool waves are in the 1'-3' range and surf pool waves are in the 3'-8' range.
