Man United transfer news live as Yoro breaks silence and Zirkzee deal 'ready' (2024)

Manchester United have had an offer accepted for Lille centre-back Leny Yoro, the Manchester Evening News understands.

United have tabled an offer somewhere between €60million and €70m for the 18-year-old and Lille have approved it. However, United face competition from Real Madrid for the defender's signature.

Madrid is believed to be Yoro's preferred destination, meaning United have work to do to convince the Frenchman to make the switch to Old Trafford. He has been linked with the Reds for several months and is considered as one of Europe's most exciting prospects.

Sticking with the transfer theme, United have also verbally agreed personal terms with Bayern Munich defender Matthijs de Ligt. The club is optimistic of bringing him to Old Trafford to strengthen their defensive options.

The addition of a third centre-back cannot be dismissed at this stage as United have also seen another bid rejected for Everton ace Jarrad Branthwaite. Their latest offer was worth £50m, including add-ons.

Meanwhile, United's players are getting back in the spirit of things at Carrington. Pre-season training started on Monday and the countdown is on to next Monday's pre-season opener with Rosenborg.

United icon talks up Van Nistelrooy role in Zirkzee development

Former Manchester United striker Andy Cole believes Joshua Zirkzee would be good business from the club.

The Bologna forward is rumoured to be heading to Old Trafford and with the acquisition of Ruud van Nistelrooy onto Erik ten Hag's backroom staff, he has described the move as the "club's future."

He told Betfred: "As he’s still a young player, then ultimately he’s the club's future. He will need time to settle in and adapt to the Premier League. The Premier League is a tough league, but the good thing now is that Ruud Van Nistelrooy’s there and he will have the opportunity to work with both Rasmus and Joshua.

"He will help them understand what the Premier League’s all about, even though Rasmus already half understands what the Premier League is all about.

"Bringing in another young centre-forward and then bringing in Ruud van Nistelrooy to help the pair of them, then it’s a positive in the long-term. Ruud was a fantastic centre-forward and I do believe it’s a positive deal for the club. Ruud would help any striker."

Why United won't be deterred by Yoro's 'opinion'

Even if Yoro has his heart set on a move to the Bernabeu, United have reason to be positive that they can complete a deal.

According to Mundo Deportivo, Real are struggling to pay the up front cost Lille require to part ways with Yoro.

It is thought Los Blancos want to pay £17m now and the rest in installments. This is not considered acceptable by Lille and United will be hoping their no-nonsense approach to the negotiations so far will pay dividends.

De Ligt deal getting closer

United may have some work to do on Yoro but they are getting closer to De Ligt's signature.

Personal terms have been verbally agreed with the Dutchman and now it is just the small matter of a fee to be agreed with the Bavarian club.

Bayern are thought to be holding out for £42m to part ways with the 24-year-old and United are optimistic about getting the deal done.

De Zerbi responds to Greenwood transfer question

Marseille manager and former Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi has vowed to defend Mason Greenwood if he does move to Ligue 1.

When asked about the prospect of Greenwood moving to his club, De Zerbi said:

The only thing I can say is that when a player signs for the club where I work, I consider him as my child. I protect him through thick and thin, even if I can pull his ear in private, I will defend him publicly. My players are like my sons.

Greenwood departure key to another new signing

Greenwood's departure from Old Trafford this summer is thought to be key towards United bringing in another centre-back target in the form of Jarrad Branthwaite.

Everton reportedly want around £70m for the 21-year-old and United reportedly want to use any money gained from Greenwood's sale on Branthwaite.

MEN Sport understands £40m was the asking price from United for the winger but Marseille have reportedly managed to negotiate this down to £26.7m.

OPINION: United must prioritise midfielder sale after explosive loan spell and 'manager fall out'

"Sevilla had the option to sign Hannibal Mejbri permanently for £17million and that was expected to be triggered when he signed, however, it was no surprise that he returned to United for pre-season on Monday and his future must now be addressed given his contract situation. The one-year extension in Hannibal's contract with United was activated in December, which means he's in the final year of his deal and likely to leave on a permanent transfer this summer. United must prioritise negotiating a sale of Hannibal considering his contract expires next summer and he's free to speak to overseas clubs about a free transfer from the beginning of January. The Reds fought off interest from Tottenham, Barcelona and Bayern Munich to sign Hannibal for an initial €5m in August 2019 and they should make a profit on their investment."

United interested in Ndoye, says agent

Switzerland winger Dan Ndoye is of interest to United, his agent, Fahd Adamson, has claimed.

Ndoye impressed for the Swiss at the European Championship and scored in their 1-1 draw with Germany in the group stage. The Bologna ace has previously played for Ineos-owned clubs, Nice and Lausanne.

As quoted by the Express, Adamson said:

"It is good that Manchester United are interested in Dan, and it is somehow logical as well. United belong to Ineos, and Dan has already played for the other Ineos-owned clubs in Nice and Lausanne. He received countless WhatsApp messages from English clubs after the quarter-final against England. Let's see what emerges from them. We must discuss Dan's future with him and his family. We need to weigh things up well, to prevent him making the wrong career move."

Ten Hag 'excited' about United's future

United manager Erik ten Hag has admitted he is 'very excited' about the club's future.

The Dutchman, along with members of his squad, returned to Carrington on Monday for the start of pre-season training. This season marks the beginning of a new dawn at Old Trafford following Ineos' arrival at the club earlier this year.

Asked if he is excited about United's future, Ten Hag told United's in-house media:

"Very, otherwise I wouldn't extend my contract. I'm here now for two years. As I said, I came here to win, to win titles, trophies. We won two trophies, after a dry [spell] of six years, so we are in a good direction. Now, with the new ownership coming in, they can help us. They are very supportive. We've made a process, which we've constructed across the summer and we are in a very good position, a very strong position to go and attack."

Ten Hag hails Ashworth and Wilcox appointments

United manager Erik ten Hag has praised the appointments of Dan Ashworth and Jason Wilcox at Old Trafford.

Ashworth was installed as United's first-ever sporting director last week, joing Wilcox in being added to United's new-look football structure. The latter was appointed United technical director in April.

Speaking to the club's in-house media, Ten Hag said:

"We are so pleased. Around the football, around the first-team, we have a strong structure that will help us. They are so supportive. They will help us in scouting, recruitment. They will raise the bar."

OPINION: United face £15.2m dilemma as they must sell one outsider in summer clear out

"In a climate where United need to sell to buy this summer, there is an expectation for either Harry Maguire or Victor Lindelof to be sold to get money in the coffers. Both players will equally believe they should be starting week-in, week-out, but that craving will not be achievable if Matthijs de Ligt is added to the club's centre-back department. Maguire, who resurrected his United career last season before cruelly missing the end of it through injury, is out-of-contract at Old Trafford at the end of this forthcoming season, likewise Lindelof. The key difference is that United have the option to extend Maguire's stay by another 12 months."

Gomes in 'no rush' to leave Wolves amid United links

According to a report by HITC, Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes is in 'no rush' to leave Molineux amid links with United.

The Brazilian has been closely linked with a move to M16 at various stages over the last few months as United step up their search for fresh blood in midfield.

However, Gomes, who has also been linked with Manchester City, is not in 'any rush' to pursue a transfer, nor are Wolves, who signed him in 2023 from Flamengo.

OPINION: 'Doesn't have it' - United transfer plans could give Ten Hag surprise weapon

"There is probably a need to sign a couple of defenders, with Raphael Varane having already left the club. Talks are ongoing with Evans over an extension and at least one of Victor Lindelof or Harry Maguire will be sold. But if United do end the window with Matthijs de Ligt and Jarrad Branthwaite in the squad alongside Lisandro Martinez, then that will generate competition for places. All three would expect to start, although as another left-footed option, Branthwaite could work as a high-class cover for Martinez. It will give Erik ten Hag a few more tactical options as well. A back three, for starters, although he has never shown any inclination to use such a system. Martinez could operate as an emergency left-back, having played seven games there for Ajax, and United struggled with injuries on that side last season as well."

He scored 10 goals for United last term, meaning his valuation has increased. United need to sell players to raise funds this summer and McTominay is a sellable asset.

Shearer backs Van Nistelrooy to improve Hojlund

Match of the Day pundit Alan Shearer believes the appointment of Ruud van Nistelrooy at United will enhance Rasmus Hojlund's development.

Van Nistelrooy is primed to be installed as a new addition to Erik ten Hag's coaching staff at Old Trafford, subject to securing a visa. The former United ace should help develop United's attackers and Hojlund is currently in pole position to benefit from his arrival.

Shearer told Betfair:

"That can only enhance and help Hojlund because Ruud van Nistelrooy has been there, he's worn the shirt at Old Trafford. Hojlund working with him on the training ground is only going to improve him. In really difficult circ*mstances for Hojlund last season, I think there's definitely something to work with there. It was around 16 goals he got in the end which is a decent return for how tough it had been for him and a lot of his teammates for most of the season."

OPINION: Absent for games and complaining about stories - why United had to change coaches

"Hiring three Dutchmen to support a Dutch manager with a predilection for Dutch hires somewhat contradicts the high performance and game model jargon the new United structure abide by. United will doubtless clarify Erik ten Hag fully approves of and welcomes the new additions, that they won't tread on his toes. The coaches' office at Carrington is adjoined to the manager's but Ten Hag will be the only one who occupies that plush space. If Benni McCarthy was such a key coach he would have travelled to every away game. There were several last season he was not present for. Mitchell van der Gaag, Ten Hag's assistant at Ajax, would be a potentially significant loss."
