I have a giant 6 year old Anatolian Shepherd (Kangal) who needs more attention and play than I can give her while I am living in a studio apartment and working full time out of the house. I am looking for an individual or family who wants to "try out" having a dog with her, or who could use some temporary love from a dog but can't commit to having a forever dog just yet.
Her name is Tollie and she absolutely LOVES being around people. She is very loving and playful. She is generally pretty low energy when her "pack" is home. She will enjoy laying somewhere central in the house so she can feel close and connected to everyone. She is well potty trained and even knows sign language to tell you when she needs to go outside and when she is hungry. If given the option, Tollie would love to lay outside in a fenced area all day smelling all the smells of the outdoors. However, Tollie should not be allowed to be in the yard when the family is out of the house because she will dig to escape in an attempt to try to find her people.
She does not* chew on furniture. The only damage she has done is scraping the front door/trim, which can be mitigated by using a plastic door sheet protector and using some white masking tape on surrounding walls/trim.
Before I got her from a rescue shelter, she had experienced a dog attack and this made her reactive toward other dogs when she is on a leash. It is recommended that she takes an extended period of time away from her trigger and so playing with her in a secured backyard with a tall fence is best for her at this time. I have started to do some agility training with her, teaching her to "jump" on command, as well as her walking through my arms when I make a circle shape with them. I think she would have the time of her life playing with an agility course (as cheap as $40 online), and so I am looking for a very playful family who would find joy in doing that with her.
Tollie has separation anxiety and shouldn't be left alone all day and night. You will need to do some training before you leave her for extended periods of time, which I can teach you how to do.
We lived with small dog recently for 6 months and it mostly worked out very well. Tollie is VERY playful and LOVES playing with dogs she has been properly introduced to. She never initiates aggression when not on leash, but if the other dog becomes aggressive due to Tollie's size/ extreme playfulness, Tollie will also respond with aggression, which is very overpowering. Tollie should never be left alone with another dog unless the other dog is kenneled.
Most important: I am looking for a family that *works from home*, has a decent sized *backyard*, and would find joy playing with her via agility course training.
I work for the city of DC and live in cleveland park. Ideally, I could find someone in cleveland park, but I can also make it work if you live near a metro stop not too far from me.
It will need to be a gradual process to introduce Tollie to your home as transitions hard on her. It will be best to start by having her over and playing in your backyard for 30 - hour. For the first few visits I would stay with her until she becomes more familiar and attached to you.
I am thinking it would be ideal for you to have her every other weekend from fri-sun but I am open to hearing what is best for you and your schedule/plans. I will pay for all vet bills if thats ever needed but she received a check up recently.
Please respond with some general information about you and those you live with, where you live in the city, whether or not you work from home and if you have a backyard that is conducive for Tollie and what she needs.
