Warning: This page contains spoilers for the April 5, 2023, game of Jeopardy! — please do not scroll down if you wish to avoid being spoiled. Please note that the game airs as early as noon Eastern in some U.S. television markets.

Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Movies of the ’80s) for Wednesday, April 5, 2023 (Season 39, Game 148):

Based on an off-Broadway play with just 3 characters, it won the Best Picture Oscar & the actors in all 3 roles were nominated

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Teresa Browning, a home inspector from Columbus, Ohio
Today's Final Jeopardy - Wednesday, April 5, 2023 (1)
Brandon Broughton, a local history librarian from Ozark, Missouri
Today's Final Jeopardy - Wednesday, April 5, 2023 (2)
Brian Henegar, a guest services agent from La Follette, Tennessee (1-day total: $23,201)
Today's Final Jeopardy - Wednesday, April 5, 2023 (3)

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

Brian Henegar—whose reaction to winning yesterday’s game was one of shock—is your defending champion on Jeopardy!. Today he faces off against Missouri local history librarian Brandon Broughton and Columbus home inspector Teresa Browning.

As I said in yesterday’s pregame thoughts, Brian’s friends on social media hyping his appearance have heightened my expectations for his run. I wasn’t let down yesterday, though, as I thought Brian’s bet sizing and clue selection were generally very strong, and I hope that continues today!

While I’m writing this morning, I also want to point out: Twitter can not die fast enough. The actions of Jeopardy! fans last night have literally chased Brian off Twitter. If you were making jokes last night, your words are unacceptable, no matter who you are, and I do not want you as part of this community if you will act that way. These are not Kardashians who are playing on Jeopardy!—they are regular human beings with actual feelings and you are causing deep hurt. Be better humans.

Meanwhile, the spring Gamers vs. MS Twitch live-stream charity relay will start on Friday! As always, many Twitch streamers—I’ll be joining the relay for the fifth time—will collectively raise money for MS Canada from April 7–17. Canada has some of the highest rates of multiple sclerosis in the world, with an estimated 1 in 385 Canadians living with MS. MS is an autoimmune disease of the central nervous system that attacks myelin, the protective covering over the nerves. If the damage is bad enough, nerve impulses can be completely disrupted. There is no cure; however, researchers are learning more daily.

Chag Pesach Sameach! The Unofficial Jeopardy! Haggadah supplement, written by many former contestants, is again available for the Passover Seder for Jeopardy! fans worldwide.

PSA: The best way to keep COVID-19 at bay (and keep Jeopardy! producing new episodes) is for everybody to get their vaccinations as soon as they can, including any boosters as recommended. When wearing a mask, please ensure that your mask covers both your nose and your mouth.

(The following write-up is original content and is copyright 2023 The Jeopardy! Fan. It may not be copied without linked attribution back to this page.)

The 1989 film Driving Miss Daisy, that year’s Best Picture Oscar winner, was based on the 1987 off-Broadway play of the same name by Alfred Uhry. Based on a story about Uhry’s grandmother, it deals with an elderly Jewish woman, Daisy Werthan (Jessica Tandy), who is convinced by her son Boolie (Dan Aykroyd) to give up driving, instead being driven around by Black chauffeur Hoke Colburn (Morgan Freeman). While the film version had a larger cast, the original off-Broadway version of the play only had three characters: Daisy, Hoke, and Boolie. Tandy, Freeman, and Aykroyd were all nominated for acting Oscars for their respective roles in the film, with Tandy winning Best Actress for her role as Daisy.

Thus, in a phrase that I like to use and will use today to head off criticisms from any viewers or readers who struggle with comprehension in 2023: the clue is correct as written, and any issues with it are on the viewer. To reiterate: It was a 1980s movie, the movie was based on a play with 3 characters, it was a Best Picture Oscar winner, and the actors in all 3 of those roles were nominated.

Today’s interviews:

Brandon was voted “Most Likely to be Famous” in high school.
Brian cosplayed as Penn Jillette for Halloween in 2021.

Andy’s Thoughts:

  • Because there is significant time left to make up anything lost, the only two betting options one should consider on a Daily Double midway through Round 1 are either “everything” or “$5”. Everything else is suboptimal.
  • Another reminder that when you’re on a strategy of Daily Double hunting, Daily Doubles are incredibly unlikely to be in the top row; thus, going to the top row with Daily Doubles still unseen runs the risk of yielding control to an opponent.
  • Today’s box score: April 5, 2023 Box Score.

Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:

(Scores: Brian $23,000 Brandon $10,000 Teresa $400)

Brian: Limit your bet today to $2,999. (Actual bet: $2,999)

Brandon: Limit your bet to $9,199 to keep Teresa locked out. (Actual bet: $9,201)

Teresa: Bet whatever you like. (Actual bet: $400)
